Creepy, Ghostly, Scary Photos

While I slowly get the fairy godmother issue together (the arthritis seems permanent), and wait on some replies from contributors (Hey, it's a weekend!), I thought I'd give you some ghostly inspiration for the October issue.

I love weird, old photos from the 19th and early 20th centuries. They always look faintly creepy, even sans spooky lurkers. And did you know that people used to take pictures of their dead loved ones and keep them? So disturbing. I have a dead one at the very bottom of this post; if you wish to avoid it, consider yourself warned.

So I've collected a few ghostly gems to creep you out or inspire you to write.

They probably are all fakes, but you never know.

  1. I love these kinds of old photos. I knew about people taking photos of dead loved ones with the living people in them. I remember parents encouraging kids to kiss dead relatives in caskets. I guess they meant it well, but seems traumatizing to me.

  2. These are so cool! I managed recently to score a copy of a book called Sleeping Beauty, not about the fairy tale princess, but of Victorian memorial photography. It's creeeeeepy!
