Irresistible Fairy Picture

Much of my time and attention in studying fairy tales is taken by images and illustrations. As all fairy tale fanatics know, the art is a huge part of the stories' attraction. This image, by William Blake, is called "Oberon, Titania with Fairies Dancing." I found it at ArtMagick.com. If you don't regularly visit there, you should. The images are eye-bogglingly gorgeous!

I love the spare, slightly modern feel of Blake's image. The colors are soft, without being drab, and the figures' expressions are both happy and slightly ambiguous. Although the picture isn't based on fairy tales, it does capture the mood of wonder and enchantment.

  1. It really does! I don't think of Blake often but am always amazed by his talents whenever I do.

  2. I am a huge fan of Blake and this is a wondrous illustration.

  3. When I look at this image, I think of peace and happiness. I have never made a comment on a picture because I did not think we could, but when I came across this picture, I had to say something. I love how pictures can tell a story and it also leaves room for you to share your opinion of what you think is going on. When I look at the image, the first thing I seen was the people in white dancing around holding hands. When I think of white, I think of purity, weddings and long lasting marriages. Then to the left of the picture I see a king and Queen holding on to one another as if they have been married for a long time. The way the man is standing in between the dancers and the queen and king looks as if he was thinking, FINALLY! I could be all wrong but this image makes me happy looking at it from the standpoint I made.
